I really don't mind what Rhino is doing either. I'm just happy that the music is being cared for and being distributed in higher quality sound than we normally have access to. And if we have pay a bit for that luxury, so be it.

I just like that Carrey scene.

Agreed.

I do really think that of the many routes they could have gone to have someone look after things, Rhino is about as well as they could have done. Thus far, what they've released seems to have been well done (albeit not at the rate people here want to see). Obviously they are in it for the money, but I think Rhino has proven , at least with other artists, they sincerely care about properly preserving and presenting the music. In short, if you're pissed at Rhino, then you're pissed at Mickey, Billy, Bobby and Phil for the same.

... now about all these new shows that keep popping up....

word BD! Rhino has consistantly turned out packages from artists that the big companies could give two shits about it. And they've put these packages out at a very fair price. People need to give them a break. Also, why is it that everyone gets a shot or two but never Jerry? Like he's a messiah immune from everything? Yeah right.

I like to think the best part of him is where he belongs - in the Bay as S.F.'s native son.

Goin good man. And you?

considering it took the Arista suits nearly 5 years to realize that Touch of Grey was destined to be a top 40 hit, Rhino isn't doing so bad...the idea of marketing unbalanced 2 track recordings of complete shows (warts and all) would be enough to make even the most daring and insightful of execs tentative

i would tend to give Jerry a lot more credit for the courage he has shown in matters of exploration, musical and otherwise

yeah well Jerry had many a flaw. There's no doubt that if not a musical genious he was seriously tapped into some heavy shit, not just from a musical standpoint but a human one. I still think people like to make him out to be something other than what he was. Personally I think the answer to this whole WWJD thing is that he would avoid confrontation at all costs ( not allways a good route to take ). So if that gave people the result they wanted then that's all they'd care about.

Look, I love what Jer and what his muic has brought me - hell, I doubt I'd be living and working in the Monterey area if not for him. Right now, I'm staring at his picture on the cover of the Playbill for the '87 Lunt-Fontane shows, which is prominently displayed in my offie (and another is in my home). On the two occasions when I got to speak to him for a few brief minutes (at a Peter Gabriel show right before the Oakland comeback shows and once at the baggage terminal in SFO) he was very engaging and polite to what I'm sure seemd like typically, inane fan crap (and what a trip it was to hear that permanently on nitrous sounding voice) That said, I get tired of the suggestions that if Jer were alive he'd personally deliver each and every one of us the soundboards we want upon request. I tend to think that his non-confrontational style, and the fact that kept him feeding the beast so others got paid (i.e. touring with the GD well past the time it was enjoyable or healthy for him), may have well led him to go along with others in the band to keep a tighter grip on the music than back in the days of tape trading. Not that I want to tarnish the luster many look back through (skull and) rose tinted glasses at. Hell, the guy did do a commercial for Levis and marketed tie-wear.

CousinKix frequently refers to an interview where Jer entertains the idea of marketing the sbd's (as early as 87?) too bad they didn't get around to it before they lost his good sense of direction

what did GD do when Jerry was their leader?

- started their own record label...for fear of an industry precedent, rec exec's everywhere breathed a huge sigh of relief when the band gave up on the venture and signed with Arista 3 albums later

- sold out large venues via mail order...passing a cut of the savings on to their fans...pissing off ticket brokers to no end

- sang Stella Blue 326 times to x-thousands of rowdy fans

non-confrontational?

i don't think Jer ever once feared that he wouldn't always have a job somewhere in music...sad that he chose to take on the insecurities of the GD Machine

" non-confrontational? "

Yeah, non confrontational. The dude had assistants break up with his girlfriends for christsakes. And how about the way he handled the firing of David Kemper?

And I think the whole ticket thing was a group effort on part of the family ( Eileen Law etc. )

I'm not trying to bash Jer by any means. I'm just saying when I hear this arguement that he would have wanted everyone to have everythng for free, I think it's ridiculous. Part of this arguement comes from his unwillingness to really commit himself to the hard issues.

Wasn't one of the problems with their label the fact that they insisted on the highest quality vinyl and they ended up burning tons of money rejecting and sending back product? Sort of like the fiscal nightmare with the wall of sound. If nothing else, it was always truly about the music.

"They're doing everything wrong." - 1985 ET interview with an industry rep

"Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. is a legal fiction, not a working reality. It doesn't represent our real work. Just because we have an office doesn't mean we have to feel we have to be office workers, nor [need we] identify ourselves as a Corporation because we have a corporation.

We need to liberate ourselves from misunderstanding ourselves. We need to protect ourselves from believing that we are essentially a corporate entity.

The reason for this attempt to describe ourselves is to free all the people in our organization from having to feel defined by what is actually an externally dictated fiction of convenience."

- Jerry Garcia

kudos to Rhino if they can ever manage to pull it all together

You aren't kidding...they should spend their time worrying about the utility of GROKKING as an NFL sanctioned device to will their teams to a timely loss, or win (though we never tested that side of the equation, eh?), or better yet, telling me WTF CDA and WAVs have to do with each other, and the like...

In any event, put we down as one that has been fully satisfied with my Rhino interactions.

I have to admit, Rhino worked wonders with the early GD catalog.

Never sounded better: the underappreciated debut album, the inorganic delights of Anthem of the Sun, and what a flash to get the Birth of the Dead 2-cd set.

Aoxomoxoa, that's one I prefer the original vinyl mix, no comparison to what's officially in print.

Can't win em all.
